To produce eggs, chicks are killed.
When the chicks hatch they are sorted. Females are sent to chicken coops to lay eggs. For every female chick born, there is a male chick. The male will not lay eggs and is not raised for his meat because the meat industry is using other strains of chicken that grow very quickly. From a manufacturing point of view, this chick is redundant and therefore he is killed. The egg industry kills billions of chicks every year.
How do they kill them?
The cheapest way is simply to pile them one on top of the other where they die slowly of suffocation, crushing, thirst and hunger. The industry claims that machines that shred or crush the chicks while they are alive, or suffocate them in gas chambers, are humane.
What can one do?
Eat fewer eggs and save chicks!
If we all eat one less egg a week, we will save 1 million chicks in Israel and 50 million chicks in the United States.
